At Inland Pelvic Health, we are committed to caring for patients through every stage of life and every chapter of their wellness journey. This includes individuals navigating the challenges of cancer treatment and survivorship. Our team recently had the privilege of learning from Deanna Young, PTA, a pelvic health specialist with extensive experience in oncology and lymphedema treatment. Deanna has developed the Inland Pelvic Oncology Program, equipping all of our providers with the knowledge and skills to support patients facing cancer diagnoses and their unique pelvic health needs.

Why Pelvic Therapy Matters During Cancer Care

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery can save lives, but they also leave lasting effects on the body. Many individuals experience pelvic pain, scar tissue formation, bowel and bladder dysfunction, sexual discomfort, neuropathy, and significant fatigue. One of the most impactful long-term side effects is radiation-induced fibrosis, where scar tissue causes stiffness, pain, and loss of mobility. These changes often contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction, painful intercourse, and difficulties with bladder and bowel control.

Pelvic health therapy plays a crucial role in recovery by addressing these symptoms head-on. Our goal is not only to help patients reduce pain and restore function but also to empower them to feel confident and supported in their bodies throughout and beyond cancer treatment.

Hands-On Treatment Approaches

Our providers use a combination of gentle, skilled techniques and evidence-based strategies, including:

  • Manual therapy for scar tissue, radiated tissue, and muscle imbalance

  • Myofascial release and decompression techniques to restore mobility

  • Targeted exercise programs to rebuild strength, improve balance, and reduce fatigue

  • Bladder and bowel retraining to address dysfunction caused by treatment

  • Dry needling and limited modalities (with medical clearance) for pain management

  • Lymphedema management, including compression, progressive muscle pumping, and Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD)

Skilled Training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage

A cornerstone of our oncology program is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD), a gentle, hands-on technique that stimulates the body’s lymphatic system to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and calm the nervous system. Our team has been trained in both the Vodder and Leduc techniques, using light, rhythmic hand movements to guide lymphatic fluid toward healthy nodes. This specialized therapy supports healing, decreases discomfort, and helps patients feel more at ease in their daily lives.

Beyond the Physical: Supporting the Whole Person

Cancer recovery is not just physical—it’s deeply emotional. Many patients share that they want to feel heard and supported while navigating their treatment. At Inland Pelvic Health, we emphasize listening, providing resources, and guiding patients toward self-care strategies that foster resilience. We collaborate with oncologists, primary care providers, nutritionists, and counselors to ensure our patients receive comprehensive care.

Moving Forward With Confidence

Whether someone is in active treatment, preparing for surgery, or entering survivorship, the Inland Pelvic Oncology Program is here to provide expert, compassionate care. By addressing pelvic pain, scar mobility, bowel and bladder changes, fatigue, and lymphedema, we help our patients reclaim confidence and return to the activities they love.

If you or a loved one is navigating cancer treatment and would benefit from pelvic health therapy, our team is here to walk beside you every step of the way.
