Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you're new to pelvic therapy or looking for answers after a past experience that didn’t meet your needs, we’re here to help.

This page covers the most common questions we hear—but if yours isn’t listed, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your clarity and comfort matter to us.

Is pelvic therapy helpful even if I’m not sure what’s wrong yet?

Yes. Many of our patients come to us without a formal diagnosis but know something doesn’t feel right. We specialize in complex cases and take the time to thoroughly assess your symptoms and guide you toward answers and healing.

Do I need an official diagnosis?

What if I've tried pelvic therapy before?

The outcomes were not what I was hoping for.

You are not alone—and it doesn’t mean your condition can’t improve. At Inland Pelvic Health, pelvic therapy is not a side service—it’s all we do. Every specialist on our team has extensive post-graduate training and focuses solely on pelvic health. Many of our patients come to us after previous therapy experiences that didn’t address the root cause of their symptoms. Our personalized and holistic approach is designed to “find the why” and help you finally get the results you’ve been seeking.

What sets Inland Pelvic Health apart?

At Inland Pelvic Health, pelvic care isn’t a side specialty—it’s our passion and purpose. We provide hour-long, one-on-one sessions in a private setting. Our team has advanced clinical training and takes a whole-body, science-backed approach to pelvic therapy. We prioritize personalized care, find the root cause of your symptoms, and empower you through every stage of life. We are the premier pelvic therapy clinic in the Inland Northwest—and we’re here to help you feel better, move better, and live more fully.

Will you be continuously assessing the pelvic muscles?

Yes. Internal pelvic assessments are a cornerstone of our care. We assess the pelvic muscles vaginally or rectally as appropriate—starting at your first visit and continuing throughout your treatment to track progress and adjust care. We also pair internal muscle assessment with functional movement analysis. For example, if your symptoms worsen with lifting, we will assess how your pelvic floor responds during lifting movements to treat in a truly functional way.

Will I just be given a list of exercises and “kegels” to do?

Definitely not. In fact, for many people, kegels are the wrong starting point. Our sessions are built around understanding your individual pelvic function and whole-body movement. We integrate hands-on treatment, education, functional movement, and nervous system support. Each treatment plan is crafted specifically for your goals, not a generic printout of exercises.

Will I have a private treatment room or be working in an exposed gym?

All our care is delivered in private treatment rooms where you can feel safe, supported, and heard. We believe that healing starts with feeling comfortable, and our space is designed to protect your privacy and dignity throughout your care.

Do I need a prescription from my physician?

Not necessarily. Idaho is a direct access state, meaning you do not need a referral to begin pelvic therapy. However, some insurance plans do require a physician’s referral or authorization for coverage. That’s where we come in—our Insurance Coordinator and Front Office team are happy to help you gather any required signatures and manage the insurance authorization process based on your specific plan.

Are you in network with health insurance?

Yes! We are in network with most major insurance providers and we also accept Medicaid and Medicare. Every plan is a little different, so we recommend giving our office a quick call. We’re happy to verify your benefits and help you understand exactly what your coverage includes for pelvic therapy.

We also work with you if you are self-pay or have a health share plan. Our team will create a detailed superbill for you, including all the necessary information to support your reimbursement.

WHO DO YOU TREAT?

We specialize in ALL pelvic health–related conditions for both women and men. Our practice is intentionally focused, meaning we only accept new patients with pelvic therapy needs. This allows us to provide the highest level of care and remain current with the most effective, research-based treatments for the pelvis.

Each of our therapists is highly trained and works exclusively in pelvic health with a holistic approach. We understand that the “hip bone is connected to the knee bone…” and beyond—so we look at the whole body. Your treatment plan will be comprehensive and customized, addressing all the ways your body systems and movement patterns impact pelvic function.

Whether you're navigating bladder pain, prolapse, postpartum recovery, prostate issues, sexual dysfunction, or chronic pelvic pain—we’re here with the expertise and experience to help.

I AM PREGNANT RIGHT NOW. IS IT SAFE TO DO PELVIC PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Yes—pelvic therapy during pregnancy is not only safe, it’s one of the most powerful ways to support your body before and after birth. At Inland Pelvic Health, we offer a specialized and highly effective Push Prep Program to help you prepare for labor and delivery, and a comprehensive Postpartum Recovery Program to support your healing after birth.

Our therapists are the region's premier specialists in working with pregnant and postpartum patients, and we regularly collaborate with local midwives, doulas, and OBGYNs to build the best care team for you and baby.

Pelvic therapy during pregnancy helps relieve discomfort, reduce pelvic strain, and prepare the body for delivery by optimizing pelvic floor coordination, core strength, and alignment. Every session is tailored to your needs during each phase of pregnancy, and the sooner you begin, the better your outcomes typically are.

Whether you’re dealing with bladder leaking, pubic bone pain, SI joint discomfort, or simply want to feel strong and empowered for delivery—you’re in the right place. We’re here to support you every step of the way, from early pregnancy through postpartum recovery.

What should I expect during my first visit?

At Inland Pelvic Health, our pelvic therapy sessions are private, one-on-one, and designed to support your individual journey. During your initial one-hour appointment, your pelvic therapist will take time to truly listen—gathering a detailed history of your symptoms, how long you’ve been experiencing them, what strategies you’ve tried, and what your personal goals are. We’ll ask specific questions about your bladder, bowel, sexual function, surgical history, and other areas relevant to your pelvic health so we can get a complete picture of what’s going on.

We’ll also use a pelvic model to help you understand the anatomy, how the system works together, and why things may not be functioning optimally. From there, we’ll talk through how pelvic therapy can help and begin outlining a personalized plan to support your progress.

Our comprehensive assessment takes place over several sessions to fully explore all contributing factors. We begin with external evaluations such as posture, pelvic alignment, and muscle support. With your consent, an internal pelvic muscle exam (performed vaginally or rectally) may also be included to assess strength, tone, and function. This is always optional and based on your comfort.

Each session builds on the last, allowing us to continually refine your treatment and provide you with a thorough, customized home program. Our goal is to empower you with tools, education, and support so you can thrive in every phase of life with optimal pelvic health.

Why do you do an internal pelvic exam?

An internal pelvic examination is the gold standard for understanding the pelvic floor. Pelvic therapists have specific, high-level training to assess and treat the pelvic muscles, connective tissue, and nerves.

Not everyone is comfortable with an internal pelvic exam. It is up to you to communicate with the pelvic therapist about your concerns. An internal examination is not done until you provide consent. Pain, fear, discomfort, or simply not wanting to are all acceptable reasons. There are pelvic diagnoses that can be treated with external pelvic therapy, but, this may result in a plateau in your progress.

Before we do an internal pelvic muscle exam, the therapist will show you a model of the pelvis and discuss the anatomy and physiology so you fully understand the rationale for assessing and treating your pelvic floor muscles. You will be asked permission prior to any internal pelvic assessment of treatment. Most importantly, you can change your mind at any time. The therapist will leave the room for you to undress from the waist down and lie down on the table and cover up with the sheet. Using gloved hands, the therapist will evaluate the external muscles and then the internal muscles. Using one finger, the pelvic muscles can be felt from either the vagina or rectum. The strength, endurance, coordination, and connective tissue is assessed internally. The therapist will talk you through the entire exam. Though it is never the intention to cause pain, getting an assessment of the pain locations and triggers is helpful for creating a care plan. We can stop at any time. We may not even get to the internal pelvic muscle exam during the first session, depending on your comfort level and time constraints.
